I like taking photos of plants - they can be very complex, especially close up. And, unlike most animals, they are less likely to move while taking their photo (but never discount the power of the wind). Shortly after I began photographing plants, primarily around Balboa Park, I found a lot of my subjects were orchids.
The now world-famous San Diego Zoo came from humble beginnings in 1916, when the Panama-California Exposition ended and a number of exotic animals on exhibit there were abandoned. Today, the Zoo is home to over 3,700 animals from around the world, as well as a renown botanical garden with over 700,000 plants.

Balboa Park is a large urban park at the heart of San Diego, California, home to numerous museums and the San Diego Zoo. The 1,200 acre park is also a botanical garden, with plants from around the world throughout, including several specialized gardens as well as the Zoo. With lots to see and do, plenty of sunshine, and living a short walk away, the park is the location for a lot of my photos.
