Using a flash definitely has its pros and cons - natural light just isn't always perfect, sufficient, or properly distributed, but light from a flash tends to look harsh and unnatural.  One way to make flash look less harsh is to use a diffuser, softening the light and reducing or eliminating shadows.  I just came across a new item, the Wing Light, that takes this a step further, distributing the light over a much greater surface and on two sides of the lens.

photo of the week #1

on 08/04/2012 - 07:20

In order to get myself to post photos on a more regular basis, and feature individual photos for no other reason than I like them, I am starting a 'photo of the week' series.  Each week, I will select a favorite from my recent unpublished photos to feature, with a description and explanation of why I like it and, sometimes, what I don't like about it too.

In support of several published and upcoming articles on selecting camera gear, I've put together a store that includes the various products mentioned, plus others I think may be of interest.

Have you ever tried taking a picture in low light, without a flash, of an inanimate object, letting your camera select the shutter speed?  Chances are, it came out blurry.  Even using a higher ISO setting and ignoring the noise, the photo probably has some blur, maybe a lot of blur.  Your subject wasn't moving, so what caused the blur?  You did.

My first update of pictures in over a month, these are all photos of animals, mostly insects (oh, and I erroneously put spiders in with insects, so, hint, there are a couple of spiders).
